The Early Years of a Graphic Designer
I have always been that artsy person, the kid in class that had the best project, the one that always excelled at every assignment. Whether painting a mural on our basement wall, sewing my clothes or starting a rifle squad for our marching band and designing the uniforms, the creative world has always been my world.
Creativity = Science + Art
In college, my interests where no different but my world expanded into handmade letterpress books and hand papermaking with Walter Hamady | The Perishable Press, a leading world book artist. Walter’s emphasis on typography and page balance became the cornerstones of my graphic design career. I also continued to explore traditional watercolor and drawing and dug into science courses, my parallel interest. I ended up with a BS in Art with a focus in Zoology from the University of Wisconsin – Madison and continued to explore science and art with a MFA from the University of Michigan – Ann Arbor in Medical and Biologic Illustration.
Technology = Science + Art
I have worked as a graphic designer in major corporate and agency environments where visual-problem solving is key as are computers and the digital world. Studying Botanical Illustration at the Denver Botanical Gardens has recently served as a catalyst and reinvigorated my love for hands-on traditional media. I have been in numerous exhibits, received their Foundational Certificate in Botanical Art and have delved into the art of surface pattern design for fabric and wallpaper. I serve on the board of the Rocky Mountain Society of Botanic Illustrators, a local chapter of the American Society of Botanical Illustrators.
I am interesting in applying my understanding of what it takes to create a scientifically accurate, yet aesthetic, illustration used in research and the aesthetic, yet scientific, illustration used in any botanic representation.
